Berkshires guest cottage

Berkshire County, MA

A new guest cottage in a verdant garden defers to the traditional forms and details of the century-old main house loved by the owners, but employs more modern and simplified strategies so as not to feel completely like a historical replica. The end effect is an addition that feels both as if it's completely new and as if it has always belonged on the property. On the exterior, the deep overhang of the second story and a cedar pergola cover a garden-facing patio and provide shade for the southern-exposed living spaces, while the durable stucco siding will provide a base for the creeping ivy that covers the main house. The interior spaces pivot around a double height stair hall anchored by beadboard clad walls, a nod to the heritage of Shaker craft and detailing of the local area.
